Literary Love Affairs
Wed, May 28, 2008 @ 5:03PM
Reading one book often turns into reading several more, in my case. Often I will pick up a book on recommendation from a friend or because it catches my eye in the bookstore, and then I fall in love with the author. Some of the authors I've fallen in love with in the past include Jodi Picoult, Ian McEwan, Ann Brashares, and Jhumpa Lahiri. When you find a book that satisfies your every reading desire, it only makes you want more, and the most logical place to look is in other books written by the same person. Well, my latest literary love affair is with British writer Nick Hornby. A few of Hornby's novels have been turned into popular films, including High Fidelity with John Cusack, Fever Pitch with Drew Barrymore and Jimmy Fallon, and About a Boy with Hugh Grant. I picked up the novel version of About a Boy while I was studying abroad in England last week. I have always wanted to read this book, but I just never seemed to get around to it.

My First Day Part II
Tue, April 28, 2009 @ 12:00PM
Hello readers, Last week I told you about my first day at boot camp now I will tell you about my first day at college. I had just gotten out of the Marine Corps two months earlier and immediately prepared for college. I managed to find some roommates through the wrestling coach, so I did not have to stay in the dorms. This made me happy since I had heard horror stories from the coach and other Marines who had went to college before joining the Marine Corps. After getting out of the Marine Corps, I remember thinking that “college can’t be that hard.” I had just gone through four years of the most grueling military outfit in the world, and had been in combat. However, the college experience was something out of my element and frankly, it scared me. However, this was a different type of fear, the fear of uncertainty.

Summer Time
Wed, May 14, 2008 @ 1:20PM
Forgive me for my lack of writing the past two weeks. It was the end of the semester, schedules got crazy, and packing for summer became a chore. With summer break now here, I will not be living with my friends in our apartment, I am at home in Scranton. What does that mean? That means that I will try to keep up with the theme of college life (also campus life) but I may stray from it a bit at times. My life at home is different than the one in which I lead in Lock Haven. At school, I am ok with staying in on a week night where as at home I enjoy going out and seeing people. As my friends and I were saying our good byes, which I refer to as see you later, they were telling me how they wish that they could look forward to summer as much as I do. I asked them why and they said “because you still have good friends at home so you have people to go out with.” I never really think about what I have at home until somebody mentions it.

A Legacy
Thu, May 1, 2008 @ 3:36PM
When time becomes short, humans find the time to pass things to the next generation. Grandmothers leave money to their grandchildren while father's leave tools to their children, both hoping that the meager gift they give will change the future of the recipient. This idea is not only confined to death. Neighbors give partings gifts of furniture, former lovers give one last gift in hopes of repairing what was lost, an students pass books to the next generation of the potentially educated. The idea that objects and knowledge should be passed on is not uncommon, but the event that causes a legacy to be passed on can be rather strange. I have been a student of Lock Haven University for five years. In those five years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, received the gift of inspiration, garnered a collection of books, and found insight into my life. Five years of work, of changes I helped cause, and the knowledge of which I can pass on is my legacy. Now, time is running short.

To Sit or Start Your Studs
Thu, October 29, 2009 @ 9:16PM
Every fantasy owner goes through this dilemma on a weekly basis. This question becomes especially stressful when you have studs who are under performing or performing inconsistently. Matt Forte, Steve Slaton, Ladanian Tomlinson, Anquan Boldin even Steven Jackson, all studs who you spent early picks on and now every week they give you sleep loss and plenty of it. The question is, if you are sitting on one of these pro bowlers and they happen to have a terrible match up, or they have not yet performed up to expectations, do you sit them and play someone unproven in their place? The answer to this conundrum seems very hazy with no clear answer...on the surface. If you play them and they do nothing, frustration builds. If you don't play them and they explode for 25 points, you are an idiot.

My Journey to Woodstock
Wed, December 17, 2008 @ 9:03PM
“I came upon a child of God He was walking along the road And I asked him where are you going And this he told me I'm going on down to Yasgur's Farm I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band I'm going to camp out on the land I'm going to try an' get my soul free” My friend Gail and I drove through northern Pennsylvania into southern New York on a beautiful fall day two months ago. The gorgeous foliage painted a picture of vibrant red, orange, yellow, and green through the frame of the windshield as we listened to Joni Mitchell sing about the sacred land we were on our way to visit. As we drove through the small town of Bethel, I could clearly envision thousands of young people walking along the road, having abandoned their cars due to the traffic jams that stretched for miles in every direction.
