LOCK HAVEN — She’s gotten to see some of the most famous landmarks in the nation’s capital.
She’s gotten to visit congressional representatives on Capitol Hill.
She even met Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York.
But surely the highlight of Kristin Brandt’s trip to Washington, D.C. this week was being named one of the top 10 youth volunteers in the nation in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

Reading adventures

When I was a kid I always loved those adventure books, about people who took risks and escaped death and made friends with pirates and tamed dangerous animals and did all sorts of other completely unrealistic things. This year I have sort of found the grownup version of this genre, and I have been reading a lot of books about people dealing with extreme outdoor situations. I never though I was the type of person to read these books, but now I'm completely hooked. It started a few months ago when I read "Into the Wild" by John Krakauer, about the life and death of Chris McCandless. I am nor rereading it for a class and I love it even more. Despite the fact that Chris died in the wilderness, the book inspires me to get out there and live life more fully and experience the beauty of creation.

Where did you learn that?

Have you ever wondered where you learn things? As I prepare for finals week with projects, exams, and the inevitable event of saying good bye to friends, some only for summer while others until time allows us to meet again, I have been having the same question pop in and out of my head. Have you ever wondered where you learned something? By something learned, I am talking about the little things such as what to do if a light bulb breaks while in the socket, if your toilet is over flowing with water, or in my case having the string on the bottom of my khakis fall out. Over spring break, I bought a pair of khaki pants that can be transformed into capri pants by simply pulling up the pant leg and tying them string around your knee (I know this may sound funny but I assure you that they are anything but funny).

A Legacy

When time becomes short, humans find the time to pass things to the next generation. Grandmothers leave money to their grandchildren while father's leave tools to their children, both hoping that the meager gift they give will change the future of the recipient. This idea is not only confined to death. Neighbors give partings gifts of furniture, former lovers give one last gift in hopes of repairing what was lost, an students pass books to the next generation of the potentially educated. The idea that objects and knowledge should be passed on is not uncommon, but the event that causes a legacy to be passed on can be rather strange. I have been a student of Lock Haven University for five years. In those five years, I have gained a great deal of knowledge, received the gift of inspiration, garnered a collection of books, and found insight into my life.

A Charmed Hour and a Haunted Song: Stevie Nicks in Concert

Rock-Goddess Stevie Nicks enthralled a nearly sold-out crowd in Reading last week, on a short tour to promote an up-coming Soundstage DVD-CD set. Nicks brought the crowd on their feet upon entering from center stage to sing her synthesizer-driven smash “Stand Back.” She graced the stage in her signature black chiffon dress, black suede boots, and silky long blonde hair. Her powerful presence on stage, coupled with her ten-piece band, quickly brought the energy level high throughout the arena. Nicks topped off her elation by kicking one suede boot high in the air, which was welcomed with deafening applause from her fans.
