Russell and Betty Nelson wed 60 years

The children of Russell and Betty Nelson and their families recently held a reception at Stella A’s in honor of their parents’ 60th wedding anniversary.

Russ and Betty of Lock Haven were married Jan. 23, 1955 in First Methodist Church of Galesburg, Ill., their hometown. Russ was a second lieutenant in the Air Force at the time.

They had met on a blind date, Betty recalled, one that Russ’s cousin and girlfriend arranged.

Russ and Betty attended Knox College, also in their hometown.

After his service in the Air Force, Russ went on to do graduate work at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He taught music at the college level in Kentucky at Cumberland College, then for many years here at Lock Haven University. He retired from LHU as a professor of music.

Betty has been involved in the local chapter of the American Association of University Women and the Lock Haven Hospital Auxiliary. She also worked part time for the Central Intermediate Unit’s Arts in Education Program.

Both are members of St. Luke’s United Church of Christ where Russ was choir director for a number of years.

They raised two music teachers, a son and daughter, Susan Nelson (Mrs. William Shaman), a music teacher and flautist who resides in Bemidji, Minn., and Paul Nelson of Lock Haven who teaches at Central Mountain Middle School. Through Paul, they have a grandson, Michael Nelson, and a step-son, Matthew Burns of State College.
