LOCK HAVEN –Lock Haven University student John Gower spent his summer putting his political science education to work as an intern in the office of Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore Joe Scarnati. Gower, who hails from White Haven, PA and majors in political science with a concentration in pre-law, will enter his senior year of study at LHU this fall.

According to Gower, of White Haven, his work with the LHU College Republicans and local political organizations led to the internship. The position comprises a range of responsibilities at the Capitol including preparing weekly legislation reports, attending committee meetings and meetings with the Senator and staff members, as well as research legislation.

For Gower, employing the skills and knowledge he’s gained in the classroom before graduation is just one benefit of the job. Gower also notes the networking opportunities as key to the overall experience. “The networking that I’m able to do as part of this internship is incredible. I’ve had the opportunity to attend many evening receptions with legislators, business leaders, lobbyists, and other staff members. Creating relationships with people that are influential in our state political process will be vital to my future career in politics.”

Because much of the work Gower undertakes on a daily basis is research based, he credits the education he’s received thus far at LHU for preparing him for success in his current role. “The ability to analyze data and summarize a large amount of material for the Senator and staff members is essential; those are skills I’ve learned through my coursework,” said Gower. He also credits Political Science Professor Dr. Stanley Berard for mentoring him and helping him to make crucial contacts in Harrisburg.

After graduation, Gower plans to enter the political arena full time. He said, “My plan is to work for a political campaign and then hopefully work as a staff member in the State Senate. Eventually law school will enter the equation, but for now I want to immerse myself in the political world.”
