LHU business symposium to address multigenerational workforce

Dennis Gilbert

LOCK HAVEN –Lock Haven University will present the 2nd annual C-Suite Leadership Symposium, “Navigating a Multigenerational Workforce,” on Friday, March 24, in the PUB Multipurpose Room from 8:30 a.m. until noon.

This premier educational event will feature Forgotten Respect author Dennis E. Gilbert, CSP as the keynote speaker. Following the keynote address, a panel of experts will also discuss the issue of managing multiple generations in the workplace.

Gilbert has spent the last ten years speaking about generational differences in the workplace. A leadership, generations, and change expert, Gilbert has helped hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals and teams transition forward to achieve higher levels of business and organizational success. Gilbert’s extensive background is the culmination of more than 30 years of business and educational expertise.

That expertise not only includes his more than ten years as a business consultant, speaker, and corporate trainer, but also includes executive management success in the technology sector, having led a business unit to achieve annual sales in excess of $34 million. Gilbert has also worked in academia, serving as the managing director of a business unit that provided workforce training and continuing education for both individuals and entire organizations. Today, he is the President of Appreciative Strategies, LLC, a business he founded in 2006.

According to Gilbert, “the business is established on the philosophy of human performance improvement through positive interventions. This reverses the typical model and seeks to find the positive forces within people, teams, and entire organizations. In its most simplistic terms, instead of addressing problems that bring organizations down, this approach highlights and brings to life the dynamics that make it great.”

In Gilbert’s view, the issues many organizations face in regards to perceived generational issues boil down to leadership and culture. “The fact is we have more generations integrated into today’s workforce than ever before. Each generation has a different set of values and that can present challenges. A give and take must exist between generations and that requires rethinking how an organizations’ culture operate,” Gilbert said.

He goes on to say that though many believe today’s youngest generation of workers pose problems for businesses, each generation has particular skills and strengths and employing a diverse workforce makes the workplace stronger in many ways. Gilbert also notes that training organizations and their leaders on employing a diverse workforce is only a small piece of his business. He also commonly addresses leadership, communication, and cultural issues, as well as succession issues for privately owned businesses.

Gilbert has published four books and contributed to works in eight other books published by Pfeiffer. His two most recent books, Forgotten Respect: Navigating a Multigenerational Workforce and Pivot and Accelerate: The Next Move Is Yours, are popular tools for personal and professional development.

An alumnus of the Pennsylvania State University and Pennsylvania College of Technology, Gilbert holds a Master of Science degree in Workforce Education and Development from Penn State. He has dual degrees from Penn College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Technology Management and an Associate degree in Computer Science.

The event at LHU will qualify for 6.0 continuing education credits. Included with registration, attendees at the morning’s symposium are invited to LHU’s Business Hall of Fame Induction Luncheon immediately following the event.
