Jen Miller opens her own hair studio
LOCK HAVEN — Several weeks ago, Jen Miller made her dream come true and opened her own hair salon – Timeless Salon at 33 Bellefonte Ave. in Lock Haven.
Jen, who’s been cutting, coloring, setting and styling hair for the past 12 years, was as excited as she could be about this new adventure. Her best friend Colleen Burfield says, “She’s worked hard over the years to make her dreams come true, and I’m so happy and excited for her. She has quite a list of clients who have followed her from previous salons where she worked. She also has a very productive Facebook page that she updates daily.”
Jen’s hairdressing journey began at Empire Beauty School in Williamsport in 2006 where she graduated after accumulating the required number of hours and then landed her first job at Holiday Hair at the Nittany Mall in State College. She worked there for about seven years.
When Jen and her fiance decided to start a family, they bought a house in Beech Creek, and the commute became a burden after the birth of their son. “I wanted to be there for my son’s outings,” Jen said, so she went to work for Susan Powlus at The Hair Refinery in Mill Hall, where she worked happily for another five years.
But owning her own business was always in the back of her mind. “It’s something I’ve always thought about. It was just a matter of when to take the plunge. I started looking for a space and found one in Mill Hall, but the deal fell through. Then this place fell in my lap.”
“This place” fell in her lap after a major fire in the adjacent building resulted in the previous tenants setting up shop somewhere else. “There was no fire damage, just some smoke and water damage,” Jen said, “and during the renovation, the previous tenants decided to look for another place.”
“The price and the space were just right,” she added.
Susan Powlus, her previous employer … and mentor … couldn’t have been more proud. There were no hard feelings at all when Jen’s clients followed her to her new location. Susan told Jen her experience when she was first starting out was just the same with lots of help from more experienced folks, so she feels like she’s just paying it forward.
“Susan has been just amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better manager/boss. She has been so helpful and supportive, mostly on the business side of things. I still talk to her every day.”
Jen’s enthusiasm is obvious when she talks about the things she loves about her work, such as the new bold hair colors that have become popular these days … the pinks, the blues, the greens. She’s always going to classes and learning new techniques and is not afraid to try them out on her more adventurous clients.
And her clients are just as enthusiastic. Here’s just a sampling of comments her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/timlessSalon/
