Legion auxiliary gives awards to students

LOCK HAVEN — Members of the William Marshall Crawford American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 131 of Lock Haven held their Americanism Awards program April 18 at the local Legion post.

Americanism Chairman Carol Wert Walker, along with her assistants, Linda Womeldorf and Mary Ellen Switzer, presented Americanism certificates and awards to eight essay winners and two eighth-grade Americanism winners.

Dean Wetzler, commander of William Marshall Crawford American Legion Post 131, presented the POW/MIA Remembrance Service, assisted by ALA unit president Ruth Bowmaster and ALA sergeant at arms Althea Watkins.

Jocelyn Renninger, one of the eighth-grade Americanism winners, lead everyone in singing the national anthem, after the pledge of allegiance.

Americanism Essay contestants read their essays on “How does learning about government and our America help you become a future guardian of the liberties of our country?”

Eighth Grade Americanism Awards and flags were presented to Jocelyn and to Lindsay Borges, both students at Central Mountain Middle School.

Americanism Essay winners were presented with their framed certificates, a flag, gift cards, and other presents and information.

Students participating were from Lock Haven Catholic School, Walnut Street Christian School, Central Mountain Middle School and Central Mountain High School.

The Jersey Shore Honor Guard gave an honor guard flag presentation.

The ALA unit had refreshments for all following the awards program.
