WEEKEND EVENTS

Last day for Clinton Girls Softball registration will be held on Jan. 27 at the Mill Hall Fire Company from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Girls ages 6-16 are eligible to participate. Registration requires a parent or guardians drivers license, a utility bill or tax records showing proof of residency in the Keystone Central School District area and the child’s birth certificate. The fee is $55 and $45 for a second child in the same family. Try-outs will be held in February. Call Craig at 570-295-6780 or Matt at 814-482-0458 for more info.

Howard Fire Company will hold a winter Chicken BBQ on Jan. 27 from 3-6 p.m. at the fire hall to benefit JJ and Jessica Lyons and their daughter Jilline. The Lyons family lost their Williamsport home and pets to a fire on Dec. 2. In addition to the chicken there will be mac & cheese, baked beans, a dinner roll and beverages for $8. A chicken quarter without the sides is just $6. The benefit will be eat-in or take out. There will be a silent auction with nice prizes donated and 50/50 raffles during the meal time, too.

JJ Lyons grew up in the Dowdy Hole area and has been a member of the Howard Fire Company since his teenage years. He works now as a firefighter in Williamsport. Please come out to support the Howard Fire Company as they help one of their own members and his family. Howard Fire Company will contact the winners if you aren’t there at the end of the supper when the prizes are awarded and pickup of your prize can be arranged.

LOOKING AHEAD

Jacksonville Cemetery Association will have their annual meeting on Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. at the Emmanuel Church of Christ in Jacksonville. All cemetery lot owners and anyone interested in serving on the board are encouraged to attend. The current board members have served diligantly for many years and they need some younger, energetic people to become involved so the reins can be passed down.

The cemetery association is responsible to nine acres of cemetery grounds and burial lots and organizing the annual festival that will be held on July 21, 2018. For more info. call Paul at 814-355-4987 or Joyce at 814-359-0307.

Rev. Clyde Mighells will provide an informational talk on Feb. 4 at the Howard United Methodist Church. Rev. Clyde is the pastor at the Lighthouse Reformed Church in Howard and he will share from his extensive experience as an addiction counselor about the dangers of opioid use and addiction in towns and cities across our nation. Now is the time to learn about this problem and how local resources can be prepared to help those battling addiction and their families, neighbors and friends to try to prevent deaths.

A free light lunch will be served at 11:30 before the seminar is held. Please reserve a space for lunch and the following program by calling 814-625-2362.

Howard Area Lions will offer their annual Sweetheart Dinner at the Howard fire hall on Feb. 10. This free meal is provided to those residents age 62+ who live in the local Lions Club service area of Howard, Blanchard, Beech Creek, Jacksonville, Monument and Orviston and the surrounding townships of Howard, Curtin, Liberty, Marion, Walker and Boggs (excluding Milesburg). The meal begins at noon so come early for a good seat, good food and fellowship.

There will be a ham pot pie supper at the Yarnell Community Center on Feb. 15 beginning at 5 p.m. Come out to enjoy an all you can eat meal of ham and pot pie, vegetables, applesauce, desserts and drinks for $8. Children under age 12 eat for free. Take-out meals are available. The proceeds from the meal will benefit the 2018 Runville United Methodist Charge’s missions teams. A team is headed to Texas to aid in the Hurricane Harvey recovery work and another missions team is planning to go to help in deep Appalachia, West Virginia. Call Thelma at 814-355-7134 for more info.

The Orviston Community Club will hold a chicken and waffle supper at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall on Feb. 24 from 4-7 p.m. The cost is $7 in advance if you buy your ticket now, or $8 at the door for anyone age 13 and older. Children under age 13 are asked to provide a donation worthy of the meal. Take-out meals are available. The proceeds from this event go towards the Orviston Festival Fireworks. The festival will be held on July 14 and the fireworks are the grand finale at the end of the day! Call Jim at 570-660-9725 or Brenda at 570-660-5283 for more info or tickets.

Melissa Stover of Queen Bee Collectibles in Beech Creek will be having a Pop-Up Market at the Friendship Community Center on March 10 from 10-5. Home-based businesses would also be welcomed as vendors, too.
