‘Super-trio’ to play Beethoven at Penn State
STATE COLLEGE — The classical “super-trio” of pianist Wu Han, violinist Philip Setzer, and cellist David Finckel will bring another Beethoven concert to Penn State at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday.
Last season, Han, Setzer and Finckel captivated a Schwab Auditorium audience with a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven piano trios. This season, the exceptional ensemble will return to Penn State to perform three more Beethoven compositions.
In this conclusion of the two-season program, they will perform the trios in G Major, Op. 1, No. 2; E flat Major, Op. 70, No. 2; and B flat Major, Op. 97, Archduke.
“It used to be the Beaux Arts Trio that other piano trios had to look up to and attempt to emulate,” writes ReichelRecommends.com. “Now it’s the Han-Setzer-Finckel triumvirate that is the standard bearer.”
Han and Finckel, who in 2012 won Musical America’s Musicians of the Year honor, are the artistic directors of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Setzer, a founding member of Emerson String Quartet (of which Finckel was also a member for more than three decades), has received acclaim in the musical capitals of the world.
The Han-Setzer-Finckel trio has recorded piano trios by Franz Schubert, Felix Mendelssohn, and Antonin Leopold Dvorak.
