CIVIC CLUB BINGO

Howard Area Civic Club is planning their bingo on Sunday, March 4, at the Howard fire hall.

Tickets are available for $25 and can be obtained by calling Dorothy at 814-482-8018. There are still tickets left that can be bought at the door. A ticket entry gets you 20 bingo games and five special games for fabulous prizes along with a chance at the special door prize. Doors and the kitchen open at noon and bingo starts at 2 p.m.

Prizes are hand-crafted Amish made furniture and Country Home decor for all four seasons. Photos of the prizes and information appears on the Facebook page at Howard Area Civic Club Bingo. A Chinese auction will also be held along with a 50/50.

Proceeds from the annual Civic Club bingo stays in our local community. The ladies have provided donations to the local fire company, youth ball teams and awards scholarships to high school students. The club has also helped local fire victims, those with serious medical ailments and families with emergency crisis needs.

CEMETERY CLEAN-UP

Jacksonville Cemetery Association will hold their annual spring clean-up of the cemetery grounds on March 10. Anyone who has any grave decorations that they wish to save should retrieve those items before the clean-up date.

The Cemetery Association is asking for volunteers to assist with the clean-up efforts weather permitting on March 10. Volunteers should meet at the church at 9 a.m. to begin the clean-up.

LIONS NEWS

Howard Area Lions Club distributed 72 boxes of food at the February 5 Food Bank distribution.

Food Bank dates this month will be on March 5 for Centre County residents and on March 19 for the Beech Creek and Beech Creek Township residents. Food Bank recipients must live in the local Lions Club service area to be eligible for food aid. Food Bank hours are from 2-4 p.m. at the former Beech Creek Elementary School.

Lions Bingo will be held on March 8 and March 22 at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall. Doors and the kitchen open at 5:30 with bingo games starting at 6:30. The Junior Jackpot was up to $350 and the larger jackpot was building at $500.

Howard Area Lions Club welcomes their newest member, Dom Orwick. Lion President Paul Confer officially accepted Dom to membership at the February 13 business meeting. Lion Dom was sponsored by Lion Steve Barnes. This brings the local Lions Club membership to 111 and Howard Area Lions Club will be honoring several men of their club with the Melvin Jones Award and the PA Fellows. An awards breakfast will be held on April 7 to present these prestigiously recognized Lions honors and I’ll have more information to share on those award recipients following the presentations next month.

AED LOCATIONS

Howard Fire Company needs your help in finding AED machines that are in our area for a county database update. Automatic External Defibrillator’s are the heart defibrillators that are mounted at public locations to be used in case of heart (attack) emergencies. Often you’ll see the AED units in hotel lobbies, malls, churches, restaurants or other places that is accessible to the public.

If you know where an AED machine is located please contact EMS Captain Rich Moyle so that the 911 Dispatch Centers can update their records. Rich will want a specific location of the AED that would include the name of the building and it’s physical location. Please provide your AED information to Rich by calling 814-321-3855 or leave a message on the fire company answering machine at 814-625-2761.

MARCH EVENTS

Howard United Methodist Church will offer a Lenton Fish Buffet at the church on today, March 2, from 4-7 p.m. The all you can eat meal will feature breaded baked fish, macaroni and cheese, baked potatoes, stewed tomatoes, mixed veggies, coleslaw, rolls, desserts and drinks. Ham will be available for those non-fish eaters. The meal is $13 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Liberty Township Sportsmen’s Association will hold their 7th annual Coyote Hunt on March 2-4 at the clubhouse in Marsh Creek. A special gun raffle for a Smith & Wesson M&P 15 Sport II package courtesy of National Sporting Goods in Jersey Shore will be awarded. A money raffle is also planned and all winners will be drawn on March 4 shortly after 4 p.m.

A flea market of hunting, fishing and camping items is planned for Saturday and Sunday from 8-4. Tables are available for rent to set up your market. Melissa Stover of Queen Bee Collectibles in Beech Creek will be having a Pop-Up Market at the Friendship Community Center on March 10 from 10-5. There are about 20 vendors so far with many different varieties of items. Vendor applications are available for a booth at $20 each. Melissa would like to keep the vendors to those with handmade items, antiques, repurposed items, crafts and baked goods. Home-based businesses would also be welcomed as vendors, too.

If this first Pop-Up Market event is successful and received well then Melissa may try to hold additional markets in the upcoming months.

There will be a lasagna supper at the Yarnell Community Center on Saturday, March 10, beginning at 5 p.m. Come out to enjoy an all you can eat meal of lasagna, garlic bread, desserts and drinks for $8. Children under age 12 eat for free. Take-out meals are available. The proceeds from the meal will benefit the 2018 Runville United Methodist Charge’s missions teams. A missions team is headed to Texas at the end of March to aid in the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts and another team is planning to go to help in deep Appalachia, West Virginia. The Virginia Rose Foundation will hold their annual silent auction and bake sale at the Milesburg Community Center on March 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Howard Fire Company will hold a charcoal grilled steak benefit supper on March 17 from 3-6 p.m. The meal will consist of steak, french fries, salad, dinner roll, desserts and beverages for $12.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction (donations are being accepted).

The proceeds from this event will go to fire company member Bobby DeArment and his wife Trudy who lost their home, autos and possessions to a house fire on January 31. To donate an auction item or for more info call 814-625-2761 or 814-470-0777.

Friendship Community Center in Beech Creek will have a Spring Bazaar on March 23 from 6-9 p.m. and on March 24 from 9-1. Tables are $10 each for vendors to sell their wares and can be reserved by calling Sandy at 570-962-2397. Proceeds from the bazaar will go towards replacing the flooring at the FCC.

The Neva Askey Memorial Dart Tournament will be held on March 23 and March 24 at the Lock Haven VFW Club. Registration for teams of three members is $30. To register your team contact Sandy at 570-660-1172 or Dan at 570-660-8681. Proceeds this year will go towards helping local veterans thru the Clinton County Veterans Affairs office.

There will be a Nittany Valley Benefit Dinner on Saturday, March 24, from 12-7 at the Hublersburg fire hall. This is an Amish all you can eat dinner that you can pick your hour time slot for eating. Take-outs are available, too. The main dinner features meats, potatoes, noodles and much more. The desserts are of pies, donuts, cakes, puddings and ice cream. Cost is $18 for adults with a $2 savings for those older than 65. The price for children from 11-17 is $16 and the cost for children ages 5-10 is $5. The hour time slots begin at noon and ends at the last slot from 6-7 p.m. Reservations can be made early by contacting Katie at 814-383-2008. Walk-ins are accepted, too.

Liberty Curtin Elementary will hold a Vera Bradley Bingo on March 25 at the Beech Creek Fire Company social hall. Doors open at 11:30 and bingo runs from 1-4 p.m. Tickets are $20 early or $25 at the door. A themed basket and Chinese auction will also be held along with 50/50 and kitchen foods available.
