HOWARD — Howard Area Lions gathered April 7 to give recognition and present awards to five of the club’s members. Each of the men was honored for his dedication to Lionism and for his years of community service.

Lion Richard (Dick) Rhoades and Lion Robert (Bob) Watson both earned the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award. Howard Area Lions made a $1,000 donation to the Lions Club International Foundation on behalf of both of the recipients.

The Melvin Jones Fellowship designation was created in 1973 and is named for the founder of Lions Club International Foundation. This award is the LCIF’s highest honor and represents humanitarian qualities such as generosity, compassion and concern for those less fortunate.

Now recognized as Melvin Jones Fellows, both Rhoades and Watson received a lapel pin and a personalized wall plaque to honor their commitment to helping others.

The Pennsylvania Lions Fellowship Award is an honor given to Lions who demonstrate humanitarian qualities, too. Howard Area Lions made a $500 donation to Pennsylvania Lions Fellowship on behalf of members Jack Hanna, Jim Packer and Ron Kinley.

Hanna and Packer were both presented their awards, while Scott Kinley accepted the posthumous award on behalf of his father who passed away on August 27, 2017. Each received a plaque to honor his Lions service.

Lions Club International is the world’s largest service club organization with nearly 1.3 million members. As a charitable arm of the association, Lions Club International Foundation makes grants available for vital community and global projects that meet a wide variety of humanitarian needs. The LCIF programs united approximately 45,000 Lions Clubs in 200 countries in a worldwide endeavor to help individuals and families in disaster situations.

Howard Area Lions Club was chartered in 1976 and currently has 114 active members. The club extends an open invitation for others to consider becoming a Lions member.
