CC Historical Society

to present ‘Josiah’

LOCK HAVEN –The Clinton County Historical Society will present “Josiah,” a documentary that traces the life of Josiah Henson from slavery to freedom, on Sunday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poorman Gallery, 352 E. Water St.

This is the man who inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe to write “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” which has been called the story that sparked the American Civil War.

Josiah Henson (1789-1883) spent 41 years as a slave and overcame incredible odds to escape his cruel masters and improve the lives of hundreds of freed people throughout his long life. Though immortalized by Stowe in her society-changing novel and catapulting him to international fame in 1852, his story had been lost to history. Until now.

Including interviews with leading experts and Henson descendants, Josiah is an unmissable documentary about one of history’s greatest figures, a life that symbolized the triumph of the human spirit over the brutality of slavery.

Also, “The Road to Dawn: Josiah Henson and The Story that sparked the Civil War” by author Jared A. Brock is available in bookstores nationwide. With both the book and film, Brock has created a portrait that restores a hero of the abolitionist movement to his place in history — a hero whose life invites us to follow in his steps.

This program at the Poorman Gallery is family-friendly. Additional information on this free program and other programs/events is available at www.clintonpahistory.org.
