MIFFLINBURG – R.B. Winter State Park offers Summerfest on Saturday, with activities starting at 11 a.m. The event is tailored for families, Scouts and youth organizations. Celebrate the upcoming summer season by getting outdoors and trying some recreational activities like fly fishing, kayaking, or mountain biking. Learn about wild edible plants or mushroom foraging, or take a guided hike and see some of the beauty of the park up close.

Special activities for children will be available — building a bird box, searching for stream critters and making crafts. Local vendors and outdoor recreation and environmental organizations will have displays and activities for everyone to enjoy. Van Wagner will give a special, one-hour performance of storytelling and music that commemorates the 125th anniversary of state parks.

Special events include:

r 1-2 p.m. — Wild Mushrooms of Pennsylvania with Bill Russell.

r 11 a.m.-12 noon — STRIKE Canine with “What to Do if You Are Lost in the Woods.”

r Noon-1 p.m. and 2-3 p.m. — Baywings Falconry with interactive programs and live raptors.

r 1-2 p.m. — Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission with “Snappers & Rattlers.”

r 3-4 p.m. — Van Wagner celebrates 125 years of Pennsylvania state parks.

Curtin Village Civil War Days are this weekend

HOWARD — Historic Curtin Village, 251 Curtin Village Road, invites the public to attend Civil War Days this Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a unique way to spend Father’s Day with Dad.

The event includes a Civil War encampment, weapons and dance demonstrations, displays, children’s activities, and period craft vendors. Visitors can stroll through a Civil War camp and mingle with soldiers. The Honorable “Governor Andrew Curtin” will review the troops Saturday morning.

Guided tours of the Curtin Ironmaster’s Mansion and Eagle Ironworks Furnace will be available for a slight charge on both days. The tour includes the personal carriage of Pennsylvania Civil War Gov. Andrew Curtin.
