Piper Museum receives unique gift

WENDY STIVER/THE EXPRESS

Mark Kaufman, right, donated this one-third scale model of a Piper Cub Vagabond Trainer to the Piper Aviation Museum on Thursday, during the Sentimental Journey to Cub Haven Fly-In. Museum board member Roger Peperell, left, receives the gift. Kaufman’s father, Richard E. Kaufman of Elderton, Pa., built the detailed model of a Vagabond that son Mark, of Lancaster, previously owned and restored. Both the full-size plane and the model visited the Fly-In in 2003, and Bill Piper Jr. signed and wrote the date on the model’s door. The model is covered with Dacron fabric and even features rib stitching on the wings and the exact lettering of the full-sized plane. Richard Kaufman put more than 300 hours into the model which will be on display at the museum at 1 Piper Way, Lock Haven.
