Slim’s deer arrive for dinner

Older folks remember Slim Coyle who lived above Cross Fork, in the area of Ole Bull State Park, and who loved to feed deer. He would call the wild whitetail deer at feeding time by blowing a dog whistle and more than a hundred would show up. People out for a Sunday drive or a jaunt would stop by and watch the spectacle. Charlie Barnum, a western Clinton County historian, is sharing this photo of feeding time at Slim’s with other Express readers. He said, “The man loved the deer and would even take them in his house.” We have heard the story that Slim took at least one fawn under his wing and raised it in his home until it was big enough to survive on its own — and too big to live inside anymore!
