An LHU women’s group in 1916

This is the I.E.P. group in 1915-16 at Central State Normal School, now Lock Haven University. The group’s motto was “Esse quam videri,” a Latin phrase that means “to be, rather than to seem.” The officers were: President Mabel McNeal, vice president Chrystal Schindley, secretary Ethel Smith, and treasurer Grace Hayes. Active members were Ida M. Decker, Josephine Connelly, Mildred Riordan, Ruth Mapes, Ida Matson and Teressa White. We’re not sure what I.E.P. stands for, but the poem that appeared in the yearbook with this photo indicates this was a light-hearted bunch of young ladies: “A jolly, jolly crowd are we, Members of the I.E.P., Gathered together in one band, Ready to lend a helping hand To a sister who may be Struggling with adversity. And our feeds are simply great, Half past 12:00 is none too late For ice cream, candy and a lot Of pickles, cakes and cocoa hot — Indeed, they are enough to make Anyone get the (blank). Soon our school days will be o’er, Then our feeds will be no more, But always on Reunion Day, The same bunch, in the same way, Will make these halls ring with glee To the tune of I.E.P.” The Express thanks June Houser for loaning us her copy of the 1916 yearbook, the Praeco, so that we might share this photo with other readers.
