RENOVO — When Jim Bowes saw the article “Wall of Champions” in The Express’s Jan. 7 edition he decided to shed even more light on the subject.

As it turns out, Jim was a Renovo High School Railroader in 1957 and a member of the basketball team that won a championship title. That title earned one of the banners that was recently discovered and now hangs proudly at Bucktail High School.

“It was the first win in 25 years,” Jim said.

Coach J. Dale Florey

The team ended the season with an 18-2 overall record, having lost to Adams Township during their second District Six Class B game 46 to 35.

According to Jim’s 1957 yearbook, the team was led to the championship by the “Terrible Trio” consisting of Richard “Itch” Aber, Tim Knarr and Gary Johnson. All three players were later named to the All-Central League first team.

During the 1957 season, the Railroaders averaged 62 points a game while holding the opposition to a 45 point average.

Their success can be attributed to not only the players, but Coach J. Dale Florey as well.

“Only through Coach Florey’s guidance and the fans’ loyal support could this have been possible,” the yearbook read.
