SPAGHETTI BENEFIT

A spaghetti supper to benefit Tina Brownson will be held on Friday, May 31, at the Howard fire hall. Tina was seriously injured in a motor vehicle accident on January 23. Another driver hit Tina’s car head-on and she suffered traumatic injuries to her lower body. She needed round clock nursing care and is continuing with her therapy treatment now.

Tina was employed by State Farm Insurance Company but had not been able to work. Tina grew up in Howard and is a graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School. She is a daughter of Dave and Kim Brownson, and her grandpap is Willard “Buzz” Brownson.

This supper hopes to help Tina with some of her financial needs so she can continue to rehabilitate and heal without worrying about all of the mounting bills and expenses. The cost of the meal for spaghetti and meatballs, salad, dinner roll, dessert and beverage will be $10. The benefit will be from 5-8 p.m. and you’re welcome to dine in or get take out meals. There will be a Chinese auction with some great prizes being offered by generous donors.

CEMETERY LOTS

The Hays-Fearon-Bossert Cemetery in Beech Creek has purchased additional land and the cemetery association will be selling lots on Saturday, June 1, at the Beech Creek Wesleyan Church from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Those interested in obtaining a burial lot can contact a representative at the church.

A little bit of local history shows Lieutenant James Hays served in the “Colonial Wars” in the Pennsylvania Regiment under Col. Henry Bouquet. He fought in both the Princeton and Trenton battles. For his service he was granted 303 acres in the Bald Eagle Valley. Lieut. Hays settled on this land around 1787. He started a cemetery on this land in 1794 when the first burial took place. Thus, the Hays Cemetery was born.

The Hays farm was eventually acquired by John T. Fearon. Around 1850 the Fearon family added land to the original cemetery and thus became the Hays-Fearon Cemetery.

In 1944 Hays-Fearon Cemetery, Inc. was chartered by Judge Henry Hipple of Clinton County. The newly formed corporation purchased additional land from the Fearon’s in 1945.

In October, 2018, Hays-Fearon added two additional acres to the cemetery. One acre was purchased from the Bossert family, the current owners of the farm, and the Bossert’s donated another acre. This has been a settlement that came about after 32 years of negotiations between the cemetery association and the Bossert’s. Henry Salisbury, father of Judge Salisbury, and Harry Lingle, father of attorney Fred Lingle and David Lingle from whom has provided this information began those negotiations in 1986. The cemetery now goes by the name of Hays-Fearon-Bossert Cemetery.

For those who would be interested in cemetery lots you may come to the church on June 1 or contact David Lingle at 570-433-0929.

USED BOOK SALE

A Used Book Sale to benefit the Howard Fire Company will be held during the fire company indoor sale dates at Storage Unit # 3 located behind the apartment building and across from the post office building. There is a massive selection of various genres including mystery, suspense, romance, science fiction and others with more coming in daily. The books were taken from the Gilbert Glenn home following his passing and will be available for a donation dropped into the fireman’s boot.

The storage unit was full of books before the town-wide sale earlier in May and I’m told that 531 books found a new home. More books are being sorted thru and brought to be added to the storage unit and sold during the fire company sale dates. Plan to stop by the storage unit to pick up some books on May 16-18. There are no prices, but rather you just drop your donation into the fireman’s boot to support our local fire department. Contact Deb at 625-2102 about the many books being offered at this sale.

CONFER REUNION
