Geisinger Health Plan covers families served by HealthChoices

DANVILLE – Individuals and families eligible for Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (HealthChoices) can now choose Geisinger Health Plan for their medical assistance (MA) plan in 22 counties, including Clinton, Centre and Lycoming.

HealthChoices is Pennsylvania’s innovative managed care program for MA consumers. The program is designed to improve access to and quality of care for MA consumers throughout Pennsylvania. The plan will be offered under the name Geisinger Health Plan Family.

“Geisinger Health Plan has been offering quality care to Pennsylvania residents for more than 25 years. Our focus on improving health, while containing costs, has placed us in the national spotlight,” says Duane E. Davis, president and CEO of Geisinger Health Plan. “We are happy to bring our innovative programs and expertise to the HealthChoices program.”

Letters were sent to approximately 210,000 MA eligible individuals living in Bradford, Carbon, Centre, Clinton, Columbia, Juniata, Lackawanna, Luzerne, Lycoming, Mifflin, Monroe, Montour, Northumberland, Pike, Schuylkill, Snyder, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga, Union, Wayne and Wyoming counties asking them to select their medical assistance managed care plan. These individuals can select GHP Family for their HealthChoices coverage.

Dudley Gerow, chief government programs officer, added, “It is important for us to have an option to fit every need in the community. For example, we now cover more than 9,000 children in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The addition of GHP Family helps us to ensure that everyone in Pennsylvania has access to quality care. We are happy to partner again with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.”

GHP Family covers doctor’s office visits; emergency care; preventive services including immunizations and cancer screenings; diabetes care; well woman and maternity care; dental and vision services; and prescription drugs. In addition, members have access to unique GHP Family benefits including the Extra Eye Care benefit, ProvenHealth Navigator, “Right from the Start” maternity program, a nurse hotline, health and wellness information and reminders, as well as health coaches.

The Extra Eye Care benefit gives members an allowance of $50 towards upgraded eyeglass frames or disposable contact lenses. ProvenHealth Navigator, GHP’s patient-centered medical home, provides a GHP nurse care manager who works closely with members who have chronic conditions or those recently released from the hospital to reduce unnecessary complications and readmissions. The “Right from the Start” maternity program helps expectant mothers and their families prepare for the arrival of their baby. Health coaches work with members to make healthier choices and improve their quality of life.
