Centre declares suicide awareness month

BELLEFONTE – For the fourth consecutive year, Jana Marie Foundation and the Centre County Board of Commissioners are working together to proclaim September as Suicide Prevention Month and Sept. 10, as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day.

On Sept. 10, Jana Marie Foundation and it’s partners, Active Minds of Penn State and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, will host “An Evening of Hope, Healing and Remembrance.” This annual event is dedicated to raising awareness for suicide prevention, educating the community, and supporting those who have been touched by suicide. A press release is attached.

In 2014, over 1,800 Pennsylvanians, or an average of more than four people each day, died by suicide. This includes 800 people between the ages of 45 to 6,4 making suicide the 4th leading cause of death for people of that age group. In addition, suicide claimed the lives of 192 young people between the ages of 10-24, making it the second leading cause of death for our youth.
