Mt. Nittany outpatient diabetes program recognized

STATE COLLEGE – Mount Nittany Health’s “Life with Diabetes” self-management education program has been awarded continued recognition from the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The program was originally recognized in 2007.

“Life with Diabetes” helps people with diabetes comfortably manage their disease, an essential component of diabetes treatment. Taught by certified diabetes educators of Mount Nittany Health’s Diabetes Network, the classes cover all aspects of learning to manage diabetes, including: what diabetes is, how to monitor blood glucose (blood sugar), how to use blood glucose results to make changes in treatment, healthy eating and weight loss strategies, and understanding medicines.

The ADA education recognition effort, which began in the fall of 1986, is a voluntary process that assures that approved education programs have met the national standards for diabetes self-management education programs. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide the latest information about diabetes management for participants.

In addition, ADA-recognized programs like “Life with Diabetes” are known for consistency in the quality and quantity of education offered to people with diabetes. Assuring high-quality education for patient self-care is one of the primary goals of the ADA’s education recognition program. Through the support of the healthcare team and increased knowledge and awareness of diabetes, the patient can assume a major part of the responsibility for his/her diabetes management. Unnecessary hospital admissions and some of the acute and chronic complications of diabetes may be prevented through self-management education.

The next “Life with Diabetes” series will be held Thursday afternoons in May from 12:30 to 4:30 pm in the Pain Management Center conference room located at Mount Nittany Health – Blue Course Drive, 1700 Old Gatesburg Road, State College.
