WILLIAMSPORT –Four UPMC Susquehanna nurses were recently recognized as recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

– Rachel Wertz, RN, in the ICU at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport, was recognized after being nominated by a patient’s family member and colleague. Her colleague wrote, “Rachel is a true patient advocate and worked with our family to honor my mother’s wishes for the care she wished to receive. She supported our decisions and stood by our side. I’ve since had the pleasure of working with Rachel and I see her providing the same exceptional level of care and compassion now to all of her patients.”

– Chelsea Eggler, LPN, at The Birthplace at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport, was recognized after being nominated by a patient. “Chelsea worked with me to address my concerns when I was in labor with my son,” the patient wrote. “She was by my side to help comfort me, helping make the experience enjoyable and relaxing. Chelsea went out of her way to come back and check in on my son and I even when she was scheduled to work elsewhere at the hospital. She’s a true caregiver and a blessing.”

– Santiea Hagan, RN, with Susquehanna Home Care and Hospice Services, was recognized after being nominated by family members of two patients. “Santiea’s positive attitude and uplifting personality helped our family laugh during a sad time in our lives. She took the time to get to know us and went above and beyond to make sure our needs were met,” commented one family member. “Santiea impressed us from day one. The level of care she provided not only to my husband, but to our whole family, exceeded our expectations. In our time of need, she wasn’t just our nurse, she was our friend,” commented the other family member.

– Caroline Troutman, RN, in the ICU at UPMC Susquehanna Williamsport, was recognized after being nominated by a patient’s family member. The nomination read, “Caroline was attentive to my mother’s needs, provided compassionate care, and made sure my mother and our family were taken care of. She took the time to get to know us and bonded with my mother before her passing. When she did pass, Caroline took the time to attend her services and check in on our family. She’s an excellent nurse.”

UPMC Susquehanna nurses are honored as DAISY Award winners every quarter. Anyone can nominate a nurse for the award including co-workers, patients, patient’s family members, or physicians. Nomination forms are available at nursing stations and at UPMCSusquehanna.org/DAISY.

The DAISY Awards are presented at more than 900 hospitals, both nationwide and internationally. Supported by both American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program, the DAISY award program is part of the not-for-profit DAISY Foundation based in Glen Ellen, Calif. All winners will be highlighted on the DAISY Foundation’s website.
