UPMC Susquehanna nurses recognized at annual awards banquet

WILLIAMSPORT– “As nurses, the work you do for our community and health system is deeply appreciated. You are the unsung heroes of health care, serving our patients at the bedside and out in our community every day,” said Lori Beucler, vice president and chief nursing officer at UPMC Susquehanna, as she addressed the crowd of more than 400 nurses during UPMC Susquehanna’s 25th annual Nurses Recognition and Awards Banquet held Wednesday, May 8 at the Scottish Rite, Williamsport.

Among the Friends Acknowledging Nurses (FAN) Award winners were Kimberly Mielke, RN (Sister Jean Mohl Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice, Leadership and Community Service); Kathleen Bechdel, RN (Pat Stopper Award for Excellence in Nursing Management); Lisa Engle, RN (Carol Fry Award for Excellence in Clinical Practice); Nancy Hewitt, RN (Ellen Taylor Award for Excellence in Obstetrical Care Clinical Practice); Caroline Troutman, RN (Catino Award for Excellence in Critical Care Clinical Practice); Katarina Schwanbeck, LPN (Angelina’s Dream); Heidi Hagan, RN (Hospice Award); Katie Linn, RN (Neuroscience Award); and Kim Wykoff, RN (Life’s Work Award for Nursing Excellence).

Recipients of the Above Clinical Excellence (ACE) Awards were Joshua Miler, LPN (LPN Excellence); Melissa Furman, RN (Educator); Lesha Trostle, RN (Leadership Team); Mitchell Thompson, RN (Exceptional Mentor Preceptor); Dawn Lipinski, RN (Outpatient Nurse); Elizabeth Double, RN (Long Term Care Nurse); Dawn Brooks, CRNP (Advance Professional); Cathy Brandt, RN (Nightingale Award); Violeta Holtzapple, RN (Champion of Dignity and Respect); Cristina Scott, RN (Patient Care and Safety Facilitator); Dawn Nehls, RN (Sundown Nurse Award); Bridget Metzger, RN (Award for Excellence in Emergency Care Clinical Practice); Lexy Henninger, RN (Rising Star); Whitney Farrand, RN (Nursing Informatics User Excellence Award); and the nurse teams from the Heart & Vascular Institute, Invasive Cardiology, and Radiology (Leading with Wisdom).

Six nurses were recognized with Nurse of the Year Awards: Cheryl Tate, RN (Lock Haven); Denise Erich, RN (Sunbury); Donelle Weber, RN (Soldiers + Sailors); Lori Sones, RN (Muncy); Donna Knouse, RN (Divine Providence); and Donna Henry, RN (Williamsport Regional Medical Center).

The dinner capped off a week of celebratory and informational events for UPMC Susquehanna nurses including research poster presentations, luncheons and blessing of the hands ceremonies.

National Nurses Week focuses attention on the dedication, commitment and tireless effort of nurses nationwide. The week began May 6, which was also Registered Nurse Recognition Day, and ended May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
