WILLIAMSPORT–Five UPMC Susquehanna nurses were recently recognized as recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

Debra Risley, RN, Haven Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation at UPMC Susquehanna Lock Haven, was recognized after being nominated by a friend of a patient. “Debra was calm and compassionate. She took the time to explain all aspects of the care she was providing and she went out of her way to advocate for my friend, making sure we received timely updates from his providers.”

Marjorie Carey, RN, Skilled Nursing & Rehabilitation Center at UPMC Susquehanna Muncy, was recognized after being nominated by a colleague. “Marjorie is one of the most caring, kind, and hardworking people I have the privilege of working with. She takes the time to get to know the residents she cares for as well as all of her colleagues. Marjorie is always willing to help others and she does so with a smile. She’s a special person.”

Nancy Hewitt, RN, Obstetrics at UPMC Susquehanna Soldiers + Sailors, was recognized after being nominated by a patient. “Nancy was front and center during both of my deliveries. Despite the varying difficulty during my labors, I knew I could trust Nancy and that both I and my babies were in good, capable, confident hands. I honestly can’t put into words just how much I appreciate Nancy. She stood by me through hours of difficult labor and always made me feel that I could rely on her to what’s best for us.”

Todd Eckard, RN, ICU at UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, was recognized after being nominated by two family members of a patent. The nominations read, “Todd went above and beyond not just for our father, but for our whole family. He treated us all with compassion, dignity, and respect. Our time spent with our father in the hospital was very difficult and we will forever be grateful to Todd for everything that he did for us.”

Tracey Burrous, RN, Susquehanna Home Care and Hospice, was recognized after being nominated by a fellow nurse. “Tracey will do whatever she can to care for and comfort her patients and their family members. She makes everyone in her care a priority, making visits when needed in snowstorms and spending extra time patients during difficult times. Tracey is a selfless person and a true care giver.”

UPMC Susquehanna nurses are honored as DAISY Award winners every quarter. Anyone can nominate a nurse for the award including co-workers, patients, patient’s family members, or physicians. Nomination forms are available at nursing stations and at UPMCSusquehanna.org/DAISY.

The DAISY Awards are currently presented at more than 900 hospitals, both nationwide and internationally. Supported by both American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and The American Nurses Credentialing Center Magnet Recognition Program, the DAISY award program is part of the not-for-profit DAISY Foundation based in Glen Ellen, Calif. All winners will be highlighted on the DAISY Foundation’s website.
