Jersey Shore Bookshop to close its doors

JERSEY SHORE – The town’s only bookstore will be closing on April 30 after more than 20 years in business.

Co-owners Laura Winkleman and Sheryl Bernard have been minding the store for the past 10 years, along with a lovable greyhound mascot. Sheryl’s first helper-dog was named Summer and now Kelly is on duty until the shop closes.

“It is hard to say good-bye,” Bernard said. “But all things have to come to an end.”

“I will miss our wonderful customers most of all,” Winkelman added.

“We are closing because I want to retire and maybe start something new,” Winkleman continued. “We would like to thank the Jersey Shore community and surrounding area for their support all these years.”

Bernard said that the little bookshop will certainly be missed.

She recalled one of her favorite memories from their shop: “The elementary school would have field trips here and Laura would read them the children’s book ‘Piggy Pie’ and we would make sure every child had a book to take home with them,” she added.

Bernard noted that on one occasion, a young student who received a free book brought it back two weeks later and put it on the counter and asked to check out another one.

“I said, Honey, this is a book shop not a library you get to keep this book. He said with wide eyes, ‘This is my book? I get to keep this book?'” Bernard smiled. “He was so excited to have his own book that belonged to him and only to him.”

With two weeks remaining for the cozy bookshop, a huge liquidation sale is now underway with over 18,000 new and used books for reduced sale. Scads of paperbacks hug the wall of bookshelves along with hardbacks throughout the store. Audio books, cards, puzzles and other merchandise are also priced to sell. Everything must go and April 16 marks 50 percent off all merchandise. The last week of April will also see 20 bookcases, display stands, office equipment and other fixtures being sold.

The store opens at 10 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with the closing time varying for the liquidation sale. For more information about this special sale, please call 398-5660.

“We just want to thank all of our loyal customers – we will really miss seeing everyone,” Winkleman concluded.
