Girl Scouts learn about Veterans Day

Daisy Troop 4016, Brownie Troop 40157, and Junior Troop 40158 held their bi-monthly meeting at Covenant United Methodist Church on Oct. 4, with guest speakers Sgt. Terry Banfill and his wife Carmen talking about Veterans Day and the American Flag. The program included the National Anthem, a prayer of reverence by Dana Hefferon for veterans past, present and those serving in harm’s way. Sgt. Banfill gave the group a test and asked them to draw their rendition of our flag. The Banfills explained that our flag is the emblem of the greatest nation on earth, and the inspiration for which American patriots gave their lives and fortunes. They also told the girls they should show respect and honor. The evening ended with a flag folding ceremony. The girls were told what each of the folds represent and practiced several times folding the flag. The Banfills donated an American Flag to the troop leaders Dana Hefferon, Amanda Coleman and Michele Long. The girls are holding a “Flag of Honor” that contains all the names of the people who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
