Thomas Young retires from Centre Probation and Parole
BELLEFONTE — Thomas J. Young is retiring as director of the Centre County Probation and Parole Department, effective Jan. 15.
Young began his services to the Court, county and Department in December 1970 as a probation officer under former Chief Probation Officer George Sim. He was promoted to juvenile supervisor in 1986 and then to director in July 1991.
During his more than 37 years, he has served on a host of boards, committees, sub committees and other criminal justice related groups. He has overseen a Probation Department which is responsible for the collection of fines, costs, fees and restitution which collects $4 million per year, which consistently ranks at or near the top in Pennsylvania annually.
A graduate of Penn State University, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Administration of Justice and then earned a Master of Science in the same discipline from Shippensburg University.
Tom lives in Bellefonte with his wife Tere and daughter, Abby, a Penn State student. Another daughter, Brooks, is a PSU grad and lives and works in New York City.
The court has appointed Thomas Backenstoe, juvenile supervisor, as interim director until a replacement is selected.
