Route 220 bridge work starts tomorrow

McELHATTAN — Repair work will begin tomorrow on a Route 220 bridge near McElhattan, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Crews will be working on substructure repairs on the Route 220 bridge that spans the railroad and Wayne Township landfill, north of the McElhatten interchange. This work will require a closure of the left, southbound lane during daylight hours.

Work is anticipated to last about two weeks. PennDOT reminds drivers to remain alert for the daylight lane closure as they approach the work zone.

These bridge repairs are part of PennDOT’s mainline project on Route 220, which wrapped up in fall of 2015. Mainline work addressed improvements to 7.5 miles of roadway to enhance the ride quality of the roadway surface and extend the useful life of the pavement.

The work was made possible by Act 89. Act 89 restructured the state’s gasoline tax system and increased fees for various registrations, permits and violations to help pay for thousands of road and bridge improvement projects across Pennsylvania.

HRI, Inc. of State College has been the contractor on this $17.3 million project.
