Library benefit is May 9; more events listed

LOCK HAVEN — Musician Chris LaRose plans a Ross Library benefit Tuesday, May 9 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

He will perform “Lost And Forgotten Ballads,” including one performance from Henry Wharton Shoemaker’s book of songs “North Pennsylvania Minstrelsy.” The suggested price is $5, but any donations will be accepted and all proceeds will benefit the library. The concert will take place in the Rebecca Gross Room, on the third floor.

The public is also invited to enjoy the annual summer walking tours, led by historian Lou Bernard. During June and July, every Friday evening at 7 p.m., Bernard will lead a tour on a different route and discuss the history of Lock Haven. Tours will cover Main Street, Water Street and Church Street, as well as themes such as World War I history and the history of Piper Aviation. For information on what tours will be happening each week, contact the library.

Other upcoming events include Book Brigade meetings. The monthly book club is open to the public. On the final Saturday of each month, at 10 a.m., the group meets at the library to discuss a different book and the social issues covered in it. This Saturday, the book is Matt Connor’s “Watering Hole,” and on May 27, the group will discuss “The Iliad.”

Local outdoor instructor Art Dawes is teaching a series of classes on outdoor survival skills. The owner of PA Wilderness Skills Survival Training, Dawes will teach a class on the second Tuesday of every month at 5 p.m. Basic traps are the topic May 9, and basic map and compass skills will be covered June 13.

May 6 is Free Comic Book Day. The library will give out free comic books once again, with costumes, prizes, a drawing, and more. Interested patrons are welcome to stop by at any time on Free Comic Book Day to get a free book and browse the selection of graphic novels.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health advocate Heather Garbrick will give a presentation May 16 at 7 p.m. when she will discuss her own struggle, how to cope, and where to go for help.

On June 3 at 2 p.m., Dr. Matt McKeague will give a reading and sign copies of his book “Darker Seuss: Extra Grim Fairy Tales of an Even Grimmer Existence.” The book, which has been called “quirky,” is a collection of short stories told in rhyme and featuring McKeague’s dark humor.

Unless otherwise stated, all programs are free and open to the public. To register for a program or get more information, contact the library at 570-748-3321 or ross13@rosslibrary.org. The Annie Halenbake Ross Library is a member of PA Forward and the Clinton County United Way.
