New elective ultrasound business comes to Centre

BELLEFONTE — The 15th new business to come to Bellefonte in just a little over a year is the first of its kind in Centre County: an elective ultrasound studio that offers 4-D and HD imaging.

On Tuesday, April 18, the Centre County Board of Commissioners welcomed Hide and Seek Prenatal Peek, located at 610 Willowbank St. The business is one of about 150 that have opened in the county in the past year, according to Commissioner Mark Higgins.

This Saturday, April 22, Hide and Seek Prenatal Peek will be holding its grand opening, with a ribbon cutting ceremony to take place at noon.

Owner Jennifer Miller said she has waited almost a decade for the right time to move back to Bellefonte and start the business. Miller is a registered nurse through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography and has a lot of experience with prenatal imaging from working as an ultrasound technician in the York area.

After families receive prenatal care through their primary physician, Hide and Seek Prenatal Peek provides them with a variety of ultrasound services, including gender reveals. The studio is set up to provide a very comfortable, inviting atmosphere, which is especially supportive for families who have had difficulties.

“It’s a place of great healing,” she said. “It’s really a deeply bonding experience for the family.”

Miller said that she has already had multiple customers who said that the experience was very healing for them, especially in bonding with their baby before the arrival.

“It’s a wonderful addition to the prenatal care they’re already getting,” Miller said. “I kind of call it the full experience for pregnancy.”

To get ready to open the business, Miller said the Penn State Small Business Development Center and SCORE, a national organization that provides mentorship to entrepreneurs, were a big help. She said they really helped her organize her thoughts and how to move forward in her business plans.

According to Hide and Seek Prenatal Peek’s website, ultrasound packages start at the low end with a $75 “Sneak Peek,” which offers 2-D only imaging, a 10-minute 2-D ultrasound, the ability to listen to the baby’s heartbeat, printed images in black and white, and a heartbeat chip with a recording of the baby’s heartbeat. The most expensive package is the $195 “Ultimate Pack,” which includes a 25-minute 2-D, 4-D or HD ultrasound, gender determination starting at 16 weeks, the ability to listen to the baby’s heartbeat, a USB of the images, a USB of the ultrasound set to music, printed images in both color and black and white, and a heartbeat animal with the baby’s heartbeat recording.
