Woolrich family displaced by fire; pet dog perishes

LANA MUTHLER/THE EXPRESS Firefighters work to extinguish a blaze Friday morning at 165 Park Ave., Woolrich.

WOOLRICH — A pet dog perished, but the family living in a house at 165 Park Ave., escaped unharmed when fire severely damaged their two-story wood frame home just after 7 a.m. Friday.

State Police Fire Marshal Nick Loffredo said the fire started in a second floor bathroom and was electrical in nature.

He estimated the loss at about $70,000.

The house was occupied by Amber and Charles Rainey and their two children, all of whom got out of the house safely.

Woolrich Fire Chief Brandon Coleman praised local firefighters for a good response and knock-down of the fire, which saw flames and heavy smoke in the bathroom and rear portion of the second floor.

The first floor has some minimal water damage in one of the rooms, while the other two rooms were pretty much unscathed, he said.

Firefighters used a ladder truck to enter the second floor and find the flames, which were contained to the bathroom and one room, Coleman said. They vented the roof and knocked out windows on the second floor to let the thick smoke get out, he said.

“It was a really good turnout for the time of the day,” Coleman said, as dozens of volunteers showed up when the alarm sounded.

He said there were no injuries to firefighters or problems fighting the fire.

The property is insured, Coleman said, and the Red Cross has been called to assist the family.

Fire departments responding included Woolrich, Avis, Wayne Township, Dunnstown, Lock Haven’s Citizens Hose and Hand-in-Hand Hose companies. Also responding were Rescue 45 from Jersey Shore and the Pine Creek Township Police Department.
