Save the date — Salvation Army Soup Off is Nov. 8.

LOCK HAVEN — As soon as signs of autumn make their presence known, we start thinking about events that happen at that time each year — like the Flaming Foliage Festival, Halloween, the General Election and the Salvation Army’s annual Soup Off.
The date for the Soup Off is easy to remember.
It’s the day after the election.
This year, that’s Wednesday, Nov. 8.
So mark your calendars, call your lunch buddies and get your tickets for one of the Salvation Army’s tastiest fundraisers, held each year at Haywood’s on the Green in Mill Hall.
It’s always a great event as chefs from local restaurants prepare one of their best soups and compete against other restaurants for the Golden Ladle award.
Those who’ll be participating this year are Stella A’s with Chicken Bacon Chowder; Restless Oaks with Hamburger Potato Rivel; Dutch Haven with Ham Pot Pie, and Haywood’s on the Green with Potato Chowder.
And this year the Salvation Army has added another competitor, chosen by those who each lunch at the Salvation Army’s Soup Kitchen. Three amatuers have already signed up to serve their favorite soups to lunch guests at the Soup Kitchen on Oct. 19. The diners that day will vote for their favorite soup and the winner will compete against the restaurants at the Soup Off at Haywood’s.
Anyone who would like to join the trio in amateur contest and try to move up to the Soup Off should contact the Salvation Army office on East Church Street for more information.
Meanwhile tickets for the Soup Off are now available at the four restaurants, The Express, the Salvation Army and the Salvation Army Thrift Store.
There will be three seatings again this year — 11-11:45 a.m.; 12-12:45 a.m. and 1-1:45 a.m.
As in the past, there will also be a silent auction.
The Soup-Off will allow diners to taste each of the soups entered in the contest and then vote for their favorite and enjoy a bowlful of that soup. There will also be breads and pastries, coffee, tea and water.
