LOCK HAVEN –Almost 150 students, faculty, staff and members of the business community attended the inaugural Scholar-in-Residence Lecture on Thursday, November 16 at Lock Haven University.

Stephen Poorman, principal of Poorman and Group (poormangroup. com), shared his knowledge and experiences in the business world with those in attendance. “I want to help you all with your careers,” Poorman said as he began his lecture.

Poorman has served as CEO and Chairman of the Board of several major companies, a certified management consultant, and is an author of the upcoming book, “Navigating the Business Swamp.” He also is the founder of the ninth largest chain of music stores in the United States and formed multi-million dollar real estate syndicates in Pennsylvania, Texas and Florida.

Poorman addressed such issues as starting, operating and rejuvenating a business and focused on the reality of being a business owner. He also emphasized the importance of education and taking business-related classes, no matter the student’s major.

“Entrepreneurship and basic business skills can create new opportunities for all majors and career paths,” Poorman said. He also stressed that anyone who wants real success in the business world needs to also be able to graciously help other people.

Poorman spoke frankly, discussing the dangers to avoid when launching a business and offered ideas on non-traditional ways to finance a business and resolve business problems.

“The students remarked so positively about what they learned from Mr. Poorman – from his stories, real-life lessons, and numerous tips for success,” said Dr. Cori Myers, Chair of the Department of Business and Computer Science. “Mr. Poorman’s talk seemed to inspire students to think about entrepreneurship.”

Poorman said being aggressive is a necessary trait in business and to not succumb to the feelings of fear, uncertainty, and doubt (FUD). He provided many real-life scenarios that could help anyone in all levels of business.

“My hope is that four, five, six people in this room will hear a few things that stick with them,” Poorman said. “Somewhere in this room somebody is going to hear something that is going to click.”

“With the new Scholar-in-Residence program, we can continue to bring distinguished entrepreneurs and business professionals to Lock Haven University and the greater Lock Haven area to share their stories and encourage aspiring business owners with tried and true words of wisdom,” Myers said.

The Scholar-in-Residence program was funded in 2016 by Steve and Pamela Poorman and will provide for featured business speakers in the Stephen Poorman College in future years.
