School board to reorganize at tonight’s meeting

MILL HALL — Tonight’s school board meeting will see new members and new leadership, as veteran directors Thomas Shafer and James “Butch” Knauff are replaced by Jennifer Bottorf and Eric Probert, respectively.

Knauff’s position as the board’s president will be up for grabs tonight, as the board looks to vote on new officers for 2018

The meeting will be split into three parts:

r A planning committee meeting at 5 p.m. to discuss the preliminary 2018-19 budget and task force recommendations. Last month, board member Billie Rupert asked the business manager, Susan Blesh, to provide examples of what would happen if the district were to reduce its number of school buildings, as the task force has recommended. Rupert expressed to the administration a desire to see the math on the effect of closing three schools, noting that she would like to see what these closings would do to the numbers, since even talking about closing buildings is serious and should only be considered if the benefit is undeniable. Blesh replied that she would have this information for the December planning meeting.

r A reorganizational meeting at 6 p.m. to elect the new board president and vice president, and to swear in the new board members.

r A voting meeting at 6:30 p.m., which will likely feature votes on the decisions from the reorganizational meeting, as well as the regular voting agenda. Superintendent Kelly Hastings told The Express that an extended paid leave, partially under the Family Medical Leave Act, for Keystone’s curriculum director, Terry Murty, will be on this agenda.

All three meetings will be held in the Central Mountain High School cafeteria.
