Mike Hanna announces grant award for city

$269,615 in CDBG funds slated for streetscape, more

LOCK HAVEN — The city will soon receive $269,615 in federal Community Development Block Grant funds.

State Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Lock Haven, announced yesterday the amount Lock Haven will receive in the CDBG program for 2017.

This is the same amount the city is expecting, according to City Planner Maria Boileau.

The plan is to put $140,862 of the grant toward the East Church Street Streetscape Project, for design work. The streetscape improvements would include new curbing, concrete sidewalks, trees, grates and curbcut handicap ramps that are ADA compliant, Hanna announced.

In addition, the city plans to use $80,223 of the 2017 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) dollars to rehabilitate Hammermill Playground by removing existing equipment, installing state-of-the-art play structures and rubber safe-fall surfaces, paved walkways, benches and a bike rack, and constructing handicap-accessible picnic tables and a parking area.

Hanna said, “This funding is crucial to our community, its parks and various recreation facilities. The economic improvements we make today will have a lasting impact on younger generations for years to come.”

The remaining $48,530 will be used for program administration.

Boileau said the city expects the money to be released as soon as there is a signed contract with the state Department of Community and Economic Development, which should be in a few weeks.

The CDBG Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development which provides federal funds to develop viable communities through the provision of modest housing and suitable living environments. Funds are also used to expand economic opportunities geared to low-income and moderate-income individuals and to improve infrastructure critical to community health and welfare.
