Theatre camps offered for pre-K through adults
MILL HALL — Millbrook Playhouse offers new and expanded theatre education programs for young actors this year, plus an Adults Theatre Camp in August.
New this year is the Pee-Wees Theatre Camp for pre-kindergartners through first graders.
The Pee Wees will put together a “show” of their own creation and imagination. They will create a story using theatre games, music and creative movement. The camp is designed to help them develop confidence and self-esteem in a low-pressure environment. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are all invited to see the final results in an open class-style presentation.
Pee-Wees is offered from 9 a.m. to 12 noon Monday, June 18 through Friday, June 22. The presentation will be June 22 at 5 p.m.
The Littles Theatre Camp is for second through fourth graders. Campers will experience the magic of theater during a weeklong adventure as they assist in the creation of an original play, specifically designed to showcase their unique personalities. Activities will introduce the theatrical process and prepare campers to take the stage as the stars of their own story. This process-based camp culminates in a performance when families and friends can watch the week of make-believe come to life.
Littles is offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, July 9 through Friday, July 13. (The day may be extended on Friday.) The performance is July 13 at 5 p.m.
The Juniors Theatre Camp is for fifth through ninth graders. The camp incorporates basic acting skills including projection, diction, theater vocabulary, and performance techniques. It is designed for kids of all levels, from beginners to those more advanced. The camp will culminate in a performance of “Disney’s The Aristocats: Kids.”
Juniors is offered from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13 to Friday, Aug. 17.
The Teen Performing Arts Academy (TPAA) is designed to enrich, inspire and enlighten young performers who have a burning passion for the performing arts. The TPAA, for grades 10 through 12, offers a wide range of classes led by theatre professionals. Students will explore their talents as actors, singers, and dancers.
Those attending must be at least 13 years old and a past participant of a Millbrook theatre camp (or have previous experience).
The TPAA is offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, July 30 through Friday, Aug. 3 (Week 1), and Monday, Aug. 6 through Saturday, Aug. 10 (Week 2).
Scholarships are available for some camps. Millbrook Playhouse offers The Richard Guido Memorial Scholarship which provides financial assistance to young actors who wish to attend.
The Adults Theatre Camp is designed to be an enjoyable, introductory acting class. Teacher and actress Shannon Agnew will run this weeklong master-class series, helping participants discover their inner actor and covering the basics of acting, improvisation, musical theater styles, and more. It’s open to anyone of any skill level who is 18 or older. The class is designed for adults 18 and older and culminates in a performance.
Adults Camp is offered from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 20 through Friday, Aug. 24, with an additional class Saturday, Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by an open-class performance at 7 p.m.
