Earth Day fun is Sunday in Triangle Park

LOCK HAVEN — Everyone is invited to come to Triangle Park on Earth Day this Sunday and discover how to cook s’mores in pizza-box solar ovens, win prizes at the Climate Wheel of Fortune, vote to adopt a favorite endangered species, learn how to make seed balls with the Penn State Master Gardeners of Clinton County, and much more.

The Earth Day Festival offers family fun at the downtown park from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., bringing together members of the community to celebrate Earth.

The event is co-hosted by SPARK (Supporting Public Action and Reliable Knowledge) and the Lock Haven University Environmental Club.

It includes food, live music, special speakers, informational booths, children’s activities, and interactive games. In addition, representatives from a variety of environmental groups will be present to offer information about earth-friendly activities in the area.

Clinton County Commissioner Paul Conklin will speak about the new rail-trail initiative, and state Rep. Mike Hanna Sr. will offer his perspective on ways to maintain and further enhance the environmental opportunities of our area.

The festival also will feature original music by Gary Gyekis, beginning at 11:30, a talk by Sue Morris of Sue’s Salves on “Healing From the Earth,” and poetry by Jared Conti.

Children’s activities and a variety of interactive games will go on simultaneously, including opportunities to win a prize for guessing the number of chocolate earth balls in a jar, write love letters to Mother Earth, paint rocks with Carol Liddick, and race puff-mobiles.

Earth Day was first celebrated in 1970 as a way to enhance public awareness of the earth’s fragile eco-system and promote sustainable practices.

“The goal of this year’s Earth Day Festival is to bring folks together to celebrate the earth and to remind people of the importance of the environment, which benefits us all,” stated Pam Dillett, an organizer of the event who will be serving as master of ceremonies.

The event is free and open to the public.
