MILL HALL — Residents of Castanea Township will be seeing some new faces in the coming weeks, that is, if they haven’t already.

The Mill Hall Borough Police Department began their patrol of the township on May 7 after a one-year contract between the township and the borough was signed by both parties.

According to Police Chief Brandon Coleman, they have plans to integrate into the community over the coming weeks.

“I’m excited to take on Castanea,” he said, explaining that the township has a similar demographic as Mill Hall Borough. He believes he and his officers will be able to provide for the township.

To begin the integration process he and his officers plan to meet with local businesses and obtain emergency contact information.

If a crime were to be committed at the business and the owner wasn’t around, Chief Coleman said he and his officers would be able to contact them directly.

He also plans to speak with community members as well.

“(We) want them to get to know us,” he said. “We have a great community (Mill Hall)….it’s the same in Castanea.”

The department has a good connection with Mill Hall Borough and Chief Coleman hopes to make the same good connection with the township.

They will spend 10 hours a week in the township at the cost of $55 an hour, an amount previously agreed upon. The times of patrol will vary between day and night.

Chief Coleman said coverage will be very flexible with the community’s needs and work with the township supervisors so they are present when needed.

For example, they will be spending time at the community yard sales on Saturday June 9, he said.

Chief Coleman explained that the Clinton County Communications Center will know when borough officers are on duty in the township. If they receive a call while he and his officers are off duty, the state police will be called to handle the situation.

“I thank my whole police committee and Mill Hall Council members,” he said of the opportunity to patrol in the township.

The police committee is made up of officers and council members who meet every third Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in the borough building, he explained.

The meetings are open to the public from both Mill Hall and Castanea Township. He hopes to hear feedback at those meetings from members of the township as well as those in the borough.
