MH police start patrols in Castanea

LOCK HAVEN — Mill Hall Borough Police have begun patrols in Castanea Township.

That was a topic of discussion, along with adoption of a new “no parking” ordinance, at Castanea Township supervisors’ meeting Monday night.

The final step to reaching the new police service was approval of a joint municipal agreement, which Mill Hall Council approved at its monthly meeting April 24.

Mill Hall Police Chief Brandon Coleman said patrolling began early that Monday morning.

The agreement states that Mill Hall police will provide 10 hours of service per week at $55 an hour.

Chief Coleman said Castanea will not be billed until the end of May for the services provided this month.

Plans are to slowly introduce borough police into the township to get residents used to their presence and understand that, while they are on duty, they will be the ones to answer their calls, Chief Coleman explained.

“We will be responsible for all traffic and criminal (complaints),” he said.

When the borough police are not on duty, all calls will be filtered to state police.

After approval of the agreement, the supervisors turned to discussion of an ordinance to prohibit parking on some streets.

Castanea Township Supervisors Ron Welch, Terry Neff and Charles Clukey Jr. all approved a new ordinance that would prohibit parking at all times on certain streets. The ordinance went into effect Tuesday.

Streets where parking is no longer allowed include:

r West side of Greenwood Avenue from Brown Street to Grape Street.

r West side of Sherwood Avenue from Brown Street to the end.

r West side of Collegewood Avenue from Brown Street to the end.

r West side of Flemming Avenue from Brown Street to the end.

r South side of West Grape Street the entire length of the road.

r Either side of Brown Street from Jarrett Avenue to Flemming Avenue.

r Either side of West Keller Street from Flemming Avenue to Jarrett Avenue.

r North side of East Keller Street from Logan Avenue to McElhattan Avenue.

r West side of Mackey Avenue from Allison Street to the end.

r Either side of Brown Street from Jarrett Avenue to McElhattan drive which is a PennDOT road.

r North side of Allison Street from Logan Avenue to Jarrett Avenue.

r Either side of Bridge Street the entire length of the road.

r Either side of McElhattan Avenue the entire length of the road.

r West side of Logan Avenue the entire length of the road.

r South side of Quiggle Avenue from McElhattan Avenue to Crawford Avenue.

r Either side of Valley View Road the entire length of the road.

r Either side of Jarrett Avenue from Brown Street to South Keller Street.

r Absolutely no parking on either side of any alleys in the township.

In other business, the board agreed to pay Harger Utilities a total of $61,476 as a partial payment for its work on Brown Street. The remaining balance is $53,495. However, Engineer Steve Gibson said the balance will be less since plans for a sidewalk along Brown Street were deleted from the project. Once the cost of the sidewalk is taken out, the total may come in just over $20,000, Gibson said.

Announcement was made that a tire pickup will take place in the township on Friday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Neff, who also serves as roadmaster, asked that residents who wish to have their car tires taken to the recycling center have them out on their curb as early as possible for the crews to pick them up and take them to the landfill.

Residents can bring up to 12 car tires free of charge, but the rims must be removed.

The landfill will accept tires on Saturday, May 19 as well, but the township will not be transport them on that day.

Also, the community yard sale will take place June 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
