Sproul 10K is on; Prowl the Sproul is off

LOCK HAVEN — There’s been some confusion this week as far as two hikes/races — both named ‘Sproul’ — are concerned.

Final checks on the events report the 11th annual Sproul 10K is scheduled to get underway as scheduled this Saturday, July 21, at 8:30 a.m. from the Western Clinton County Sportsman’s Assn.

But, the 15th annual Prowl the Sproul scheduled next weekend — July 27-29– has been cancelled due to a lack of attendance, according to Keystone Trails Association Executive Director Joe Neville.

Tomorrow’s Sproul 10K, a run through the mountains of the Sproul State Forest, is three miles of uphill to the top of McCloskey mountain and then a blistering 3.7 miles downhill to the finish. It’s been called one of the most challenging 10K’s around.

The Sportsman’s Club is host of this event that takes runners/walkers through vistas, stream crossings and a technical single track.

More than 300 participants have reportedly registered to participate in this year’s Sproul. There is no race day registration.

Meanwhile, officials from the Keystone Trail Association report they are planning a new Prowl the Sproul hiking weekend next year in the Tiadaghton State Forest of the Pine Creek Valley to take the place of the one that has been cancelled. Details will be forthcoming.
