Final hearing Wednesday on Centre, Bellefonte CDBG funds

BELLEFONTE — The boards of Centre County and Bellefonte Borough have scheduled a joint final public hearing on the county’s intention to apply for approximately $144,976 in Community Development Block Grant funds, CDBG, for the 2018 program.

The hearing begins at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 26, in room 146 of the Willowbank Building, 420 Holmes St.

Under Act 179 of 1984, Bellefonte Borough, as an entitlement municipality, is slated to receive $109,514 of the CDBG grant, according to Centre County Planning & Community Development Office information. The grant program is administered through the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.

Projects must meet specific national objectives to receive funding. These include:

– Benefit low- and moderate-income populations;

– Prevent or eliminate neighborhood slums or blight;

– Alleviate immediate threats to health and safety of the community.

Centre County’s list of projects under consideration for grant funding include: construction of a new potable water storage tank in Unionville Borough ($272,552), with approximately $59,910 earmarked for grant administration.

Bellefonte Borough’s list of projects under consideration include: ongoing safety improvements at Talleyrand Park ($89,804), with $19,710 earmarked for grant administration.

While this is the final public hearing, citizens wishing to review the first public hearing, held June 27, may obtain copies of the minutes, agenda and comments from the Centre County Planning & Community Development Office, 420 Holmes St., in Bellefonte.

After this public hearing, the Bellefonte Borough Council is expected to take final action on the applications at its council meeting Monday, Oct. 15, at 7:30 p.m. Similarly, the Centre County Board of Commissioners is expected to take action on the final applications at the board’s Oct. 23 meeting, which begins at 10 a.m.
