WILLIAMSPORT — The Lycoming County commissioners presented three deputy sheriffs with Life Saving awards for their involvement in stopping a murder suspect who led police on a high-speed chase on Nov. 7, 2017.

Chris Warden, Cody Barto and Nick Labe, who was not present due to illness, each were awarded for responding to a shots-fired call and helping state police stop the armed suspect, who fled from a location on West Third Street and down Route 220 toward Jersey Shore before looping back and finally ending at the Sheetz in Linden.

“He was firing at state police and simultaneously firing at our officers,” said Sheriff Mark Lusk. “At some point, I think he realized he was surrounded and he ended it. No one was injured (at Sheetz), a lot of people were scared. It only lasted about 12 to 14 seconds, but it’s 12 to 14 seconds of total terror for the people who have to face that. I’d be remiss if I didn’t recognize these officers. I believe they saved lives, I think they made a difference.”

The recognition was delayed nearly a year due to an ongoing investigation, Lusk added.

Commissioner Tony Mussare recalled the incident and talking to others who witnessed it.

“I have a lot of admiration for anybody who has to carry the gun and get into these situations,” he said. “I want you to be a hero to people, but I also want you to go home safe. I don’t know how you find that balance, but that’s why the public needs to see this side to the story.”
