RENOVO — Renovo Mayor Tom Tarantella Jr. cited an online article that made its way through social media this week during a borough council meeting Thursday.

In the Mayor’s opinion it tainted the facts of a locally highly followed case involving John Edward Meyers of Loganville.

Meyers was all over social media in January when Renovo police issued a warrant for his arrest the week of Jan. 6. He was described as a “suspicious individual” after he allegedly threatened an individual in the borough with a firearm.

Meyers was taken into custody on Jan. 12 by York Area Regional Police in York County on Jan. 10 and transported back to Clinton County where he was arraigned by District Judge Frank Mills, facing charges of possession of a firearm prohibited, a felony, and simple assault, a misdemeanor.

A hearing was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 12, related to the charged.

The witness in that case made it known Tuesday morning that due to an ice and snowstorm that they would not be making the trip to court.

Tarantella explained to council that Renovo Police Corporal Mike Jeffries consulted with Assistant District Attorney Michael Angelelli.

After realizing that their case was in much worse shape without the witness it was decided to allow the charges to be dismissed and then immediately refiled for a future date, he said.

Tarantella further went on to state that the article that appeared online and eventually on social media led readers to believe that the Renovo Police didn’t show up, as comments and sentiments quickly felt that it was out of negligence on the Renovo Police, not by design.

Tarantella encouraged all of council to begin explaining immediately to people in town that what happened was planned basically out of necessity.

The Meyers situation started just after the new year and was largely bolstered by social media.

At the January meeting Corporal Jeffries had relayed to council that many of the stories on social media had no basis and despite many stating that he was wanted by law enforcement for a myriad of reasons there were no active warrants.

The charges that ultimately led to Meyers’s arrest came following an altercation with the witness that could not make the case Tuesday morning, Jeffries said.

In further RPD news council recently interviewed two candidates for a part time position and decided to hire Victor Foley as a new officer to that position.

Council has set up a Sunday, March 3 meeting at 2 p.m. to be held at the Sons and Daughters of Italy. They’re inviting all Delaware Avenue residents to attend to be briefed on all of the facts regarding a $1 million multi-modal grant that would connect a walkway from the 16th Street Bridge to Paddy’s Run in East Renovo.

Several on council as well as grant writer Kari Kepler feel that the residents still do not have all of the facts regarding the grant and want to personally give explanations and answer questions.

Council will also soon be putting the former Family Dollar store up for bid. The property on 9th and Huron streets was home to Family Dollar for 15 years before closing last year. Council took possession of the property and would love to see the site hustling with business once again.
