Bellefonte board loses school director

BELLEFONTE — The Bellefonte Area School District is losing a board member.

At Tuesday night’s board meeting, the board approved the resignation of Dr. Lorraine Mulfinger. She was not present at the meeting, which took place at the Bellefonte Area Middle School cafeteria.

Although the resignation did not formally appear on the agenda, several board members took time out to thank Mulfinger for her service to the district.

“I just want to thank her for all the time she donated and (for her) service to the district,” said board member Rodney Musser.

Board vice president Bob Lumley-Sapanski said that Mulfinger was responsible for him being on the board. He recalled a phone call Mulfinger made to his house to ask his wife to join the board.

“She’s responsible for me getting on the board. When there was an open position, she called up our house and asked my wife and asked if she’d be willing to join (the board). She said, ‘what do you think I’m crazy?'” he said, laughing. “I guess I was crazy because here I am. I want to thank her. We appreciate all of her time.”

Board president Jon Guizar echoed those sentiments.

“I want to congratulate her on her next endeavor, whatever that might be. We wish her the best and thank her for all of her years of public service,” he said.

Mulfinger’s resignation was unanimously accepted. The board will now advertise the open seat and look to fill it at its August meeting.

“For anyone out there, if you are interested in a board position, now is your chance to step up,” Guizar said.

The board also accepted several resignations:

∫ Bethany Eicholtz from the position of para educator at Bellefonte Area High School, effective date June 25, 2019. Eicholtz has been with the district since November, 2014.

∫ Meredith Freeman from the position of kindergarten teacher at Marion-Walker Elementary School, effective date July 16, 2019. Freeman has been with the district since August 2016.

∫ Nicole Eckley from the position of eighth grade social studies teacher at Bellefonte Area Middle School effective date July 15, 2019.

“Three amazing people have turned in resignations and I just can’t thank them enough for what they’ve done for our district and our students,” said superintendent Michelle Saylor. “Their contributions will be sorely missed. I wish them all well in their endeavors.”

In other business, the board:

∫ Agreed to hire a collection agency to try and recover more than $12,000 unpaid cafeteria bills.

∫ Approved the contract of Brit Milazzo to the position of public relations director. It authorized the board president and board secretary to execute her contract on behalf of the district. The contract is for three years with a beginning salary of $50,000.

The board will meet just once in August. The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13 at the middle school cafeteria.
