KC looking for SMILES, volunteers

MILL HALL –Keystone Central is seeking to increase and strengthen its volunteer programs.

Volunteering not only benefits students, it helps the classroom, the whole school, and the community by giving students positive interaction, support, and encouragement.

The SMILES (Senior Motivators in Learning and Education Services) Program is open to residents of property owners in the area who are retired, pay residential property taxes and meet the established income guidelines.

Participants have the opportunity to volunteer 100 hours of service in exchange for a $500 reduction in next year’s school property taxes. The tax reduction is limited to one person per primary taxable residence.

The experience and knowledge of senior citizen volunteers are needed in a broad range of areas including working with students and helping in our buildings.

WORKING WITH STUDENTS

∫ Helping students in the cafeteria, library, classroom, or computer lab

∫ Helping as a tutor

∫ Listening to children read or reading to them

WORKING IN SUPPORT AREAS

∫ Playing piano or other musical instruments

∫ Assisting in art, physical education, library, etc.

∫ Working in offices and building support:

∫ Special assignments in cleaning, grounds keeping or painting

∫ Assisting with office duties

Clearances required include Act 34 (Criminal Background Clearance); Act 151 (Child Abuse Clearance); Act 114 (FBI Clearance) and Mandated Reporter Certificate.

Participation is limited to the first 75 participants who meet the income guidelines. Please provide a copy of your KCSD Local Income Tax Return or a copy of SSI deposit as proof of income.
