LOGANTON — King’s Country Store first opened its doors in April of 1990 when Danny and Susie King realized there was a need for a reasonably priced grocery store in the Clinton County area. Today, almost three decades later, their idea is still going strong, and the store that they built, is as successful as the day it first opened, but under newer management.

In August of 2017 King’s oldest son, Daniel Jr. and his wife Sara, bought the store and say that business is good. Daniel, in addition to being a store-keeper, is also a crop farmer who owns the fields, and the cows, that surround the store. “We’ve enjoyed taking over things, and you’ll still see my Mom and Dad tinkering around the place. It gives them something to do as they get older and they like to see their old customers.”

Daniel and Sara have four children – three girls and a boy. “Our oldest is 7, and although he’s not old enough to work in the store, you’ll see him around, as you will other family members. My Dad always said that the success of this business is largely due to the whole family working together, and Sara and I feel the same way.”

AMBER MORRIS/THE EXPRESS The shelves at King’s Country Store are filled with bargains.

King’s Country Store carries everything from baking supplies, to laundry detergent, to deli meats and cheeses, to their ever popular salvage items.

The shelves are clean and always well stocked, and part of the appeal of shopping at King’s is not knowing what treasures await from one visit to the next.

If you find something you like at the store, it’s a good idea to pick it up right away because the turn-over at the shop is so big that they often sell out of items within the first few days.

Another perk of shopping at King’s is the neighborly treatment that the customers receive from the workers. Each person who enters through the double doors is greeted with a smile and a “hello.” Occasionally a song drifts across the store from the young Amish girls who are replenishing the shelves in the first aisle, where there is an overabundance of candy and other sweets.

According to King’s staff, their canned goods aisle is the most popular section of the store. In the same aisle, shoppers can find popular and high-end brands of coffee in ground, whole bean, and even K-cups, at unbelievably low prices. The store sells John F. Martin lunch meats and cheeses, and the walk-in cooler is equipped with a freezer that features numerous varieties of ice cream, frozen hamburger, pies, and chicken nuggets.

King’s dry goods section has the typical ingredients needed to bake bread, or make a cake, but in addition to those staples, they also carry hard to find items like International ready made cuisines and spices. For those who are health conscience, the store carries lots of good food choices like coconut oil, MCT oil, local honey, protein bars, whole wheat flour, and fresh produce.

“We like having our store because it is nice to be familiar with our customers. I know most of the people who come in here, even if I can’t put a name to all of their faces, I do recognize them. Most of them know my name though,” Daniel said with a laugh. “We hope that everyone enjoys shopping here.”
