Shoebox collections start Monday

Operation Christmas Child collects gifts of shoeboxes filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and fun toys, and delivers them to children from a war-torn or disaster-stricken region of the world. For many of the children, the gift-filled shoebox is the first gift they have ever received.

Local sites will be open next week to accept shoeboxes.

Follow these steps to participate in Operation Christmas Child:

r Find a medium-sized cardboard shoebox or plastic shoebox and choose to pack it for a boy or girl, then decide the age category: 2-4, 5-9, or 10-14.

r Fill the shoebox with new items like small toys, hygiene items, school supplies, and a “wow” item. Items that can’t be included are candy, toothpaste, used or damaged items, war-related toys, food or liquids.

r Gift-wrap the shoebox, if you wish, but do not seal it closed. (Try rubber bands to keep the box and lid together.)

r You may enclose a personal note and photo, with contact information, if you would like.

r To help defer shipping costs, give a suggested donation of $9, by either placing the donation in your shoebox or using the online giving option “Follow Your Box.” With “Follow Your Box,” you can print the tracking barcode label and attach it to the outside lid of the shoebox so you can discover the destination country of your shoebox gift. (Find “Follow Your Box” under “Look-Up Tool” on The same online donation and tracking barcode label can be used for multiple shoebox gifts. Try not to place tape over the tracking barcode.
