Churches announce Shrove Tuesday dinners

Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is Feb. 14. Special services will be held in churches locally and around the world.

In addition, local churches are planning dinners on Tuesday for Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras), Feb. 13 this year, as a way to mark the day before the solemn season of Lent begins.


St. John Lutheran, Booneville — Pancake dinner, 6:30 p.m.

St. John Lutheran, Jersey Shore — Dinner of pancakes, French toast and sausage, 6 p.m., cooked by the youth of the church.

St. Mark Lutheran, Snydertown — Pancake and sausage dinner, 5:30-7 p.m., at no charge, with a love offering taken.


Sugar Valley community — 7:30 p.m. service at Albright United Methodist Church.

United Methodist congregations between Lock Haven and Jersey Shore — 7 p.m. service at McElhattan United Methodist. This will begin The Lord’s Prayer Community Lenten Service Series, with a pastor preaching from a portion of The Lord’s Prayer each week. Rev. Samantha McElwee brings the message Wednesday on “Our Father, Who art in Heaven.” The series begins Sunday, Feb. 18 with weekly services at 4 p.m. and preachers rotate among the participating United Methodist clergy and the congregations of Farrandsville, Avis, Phelps Chapel, Woolrich, McElhattan, Liberty, Dunnstown and Swissdale.

Salona United Methodist — Hosting the sister church at Rote for a 7 p.m. service with Communion and distribution of ashes.

United Evangelical Lutheran, Lock Haven — 12 noon service in the chapel.

St. John Lutheran, Jersey Shore — Services at 6 a.m. in the chapel and 7 p.m. in the nave.

St. Mark Lutheran, Snydertown —

7 p.m. service.
