Beech Creek seniors best Kiski Valley in Region 7 title game

BEECH CREEK – Good teams find a way to deal with adversity and eventually climb to the top. As of Wednesday afternoon, you can include the Beech Creek Senior Division American Legion baseball team in that mix.

Nobody had to tell the Crickets how good they were. They knew that. But maybe it was just being faced with a few bumps on the road that made them realize what earned them a very successful season thus far.

First there was winning the Central Penn League title with a solid 12-2 record, then came a 3-1 mark in the CPL post-season tournament that earned them the top ranked team among CPL teams entering the Region 7 tournament.

In the Region 7 affair, the Crickets started strong with wins over Latrobe (3-2), Bedford (8-4) and Kiski Valley (12-1). On the heels of those three wins came the only hiccup for Beech Creek as the Crickets fell to Claysburg (8-7) after taking a lead into the last inning.

Paired with Kiski Valley for the second time in the tournament, the Crickets found the going much rougher than in the first meeting, but they managed to find a way to win in the final inning.

Leading for much of the game, the Crickets saw Kiski rally for three runs in the eighth inning to take a 6-5 as they faced their biggest obstacle in the tournament.

However, not to be denied, the Crickets broke the bats loose in the top of the ninth to tally three runs for an 8-6 lead that would wind up being the final. Closing out the tournament in fine fashion, Beech Creek flashed a little leather in the bottom of the ninth as it turned a double play to bring the curtain down in their championship run.

Next in line for the Crickets will be the state tournament (July 26-30) to be held at Bear Stadium in Boyertown. Stay tuned for details on that tournament.
