Alice Kathleen Bierly
Alice Kathleen Bierly, 97, of Jersey Shore, passed away and went to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, at 7:30 in her daughter’s home in Larryville. Alice was fondly known to many people by her nickname “Kate.”
She was born in Jersey Shore on Aug. 23, 1918, to the late Jonathan Wesley and Kathleen Ruth (Snyder) Marshall.
Kate graduated from Jersey Shore Area High School in l937; after graduation she went to beauty school in Williamsport and worked in the salons in the Carroll House department store in Williamsport and also at the beauty salon and barbershop of “Piney” Devine’s on Allegheny Street in Jersey Shore.
Kate married Vinson “Vince” Bierly from Jersey Shore, on April 1, 1944 and shared many happy years (67) until Vince passed away on March 5, 2012.
While Vince was in the Army Kate joined him and worked as a civil servant in the bases assigned as a clerk typist and also as a photography assistant and learned development of negatives during the war.
After the war they returned to Jersey Shore and eventually settled in Waterville where they bought the old Flying A Gas station and built from the ground up the Bierly’s gas station/garage and Restaurant which stayed in their operation for over 20 years.
After retirement she was active with crafts, art and gardening. She was a member of the Waterville firemen’s auxiliary the many years while living in Waterville. She was a member of the Jersey Shore Church of God and then of the Crossroads Community Church.
Kate is survived by her two children, son Jonathan (Candice) Bierly of Jersey Shore, and daughter Linda (Fred) Sanders of Larryville; six grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Kate was preceded in death by three brothers, Jake, James and Floyd Marshall, and also her son-in-law Fred Sanders.
Kate’s Life Tribute Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2016, at the Crossroads Community Church, 1454 S. Route 44, Antes Fort, with her pastor John Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in the Jersey Shore Cemetery. Family and Friends may call Monday evening June 6, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.
